Quick answer: SMAS (Safety Management Advisory Services) is a UK accreditation scheme whose Worksafe certificate meets SSIP health and safety standards. Many housebuilders and main contractors ask for it. WSG prepares and submits your SMAS application for a fixed price from £395 +VAT. If you're new to SMAS and join through us, you get 30% off your first-year SMAS membership fee (paid to SMAS).

Why clients ask for SMAS

When a client asks for SMAS, they're checking that your health and safety is in order before you start on site. Hold SMAS and you can quote with confidence instead of scrambling through a long questionnaire at pre-qualification. Some housebuilders now name SMAS specifically, so having it ready keeps those doors open.

The three SMAS Worksafe levels

LevelWhat it coversStandard it meets
WorksafeCore health and safetySSIP
Worksafe PlusEverything in Worksafe, plus standard pre-qualification questions (environmental, quality, finance and company standing). SMAS says it meets the Building Safety ActAbove SSIP (PAS 91-level)
Worksafe ProThe top level, covering ten key areasCommon Assessment Standard (CAS)

Go with the level your client names. If they just say "SMAS" or "SSIP", Worksafe is usually enough. Not sure? See Which accreditation do I need? and What is SSIP?.

How much does SMAS cost?

There are two parts:

  1. SMAS's own membership fee — set by SMAS and paid directly to them. We don't publish SMAS's fee table here (it can change by size and level). Ask us, or SMAS, for the exact figure for your business.
  2. WSG's fixed-price support — what we charge to prepare and submit your application:

SMAS Worksafe Plus£595 +VAT£795 +VAT£895 +VAT

30% off your first SMAS year through us: if you're new to SMAS and join through WSG, you get 30% off your first-year SMAS membership fee. The discount is for year one only. You still pay that fee to SMAS.

How WSG helps you get SMAS

We work with SMAS on applications for UK contractors. With standalone support we:

  • Confirm which Worksafe level you need
  • Complete your application and upload your evidence
  • Submit it and handle any questions SMAS sends back
  • Aim to submit within 2 to 3 working days of receiving what we need

SMAS says certification then takes 1 to 7 days, and can be as little as 1 day for Worksafe and Worksafe Plus.

Money-back guarantee: if you aren't accredited, you get 100% of our fee back, provided you sign documents, supply information and complete toolbox talks within reasonable timescales. SMAS's own fees aren't refundable. Terms apply.

The one your client asks for. Worksafe covers health and safety (SSIP). Worksafe Plus adds standard pre-qualification questions. Worksafe Pro meets CAS for many public sector and high-value jobs. See Which accreditation do I need?.

How long does SMAS take?
